Our own twist on this cajun classic has the most delicious slow-roasted pork, seasoned okra and bell peppers, and enough of a kick to make you realize that you have never had a backpacking meal this good.
As always, our meals offer flexibility and customizability: no rice to be found here for our keto and paleo fans, but our carb-loving customers can easily add some instant rice to this meal for an incredible (and inexpensive way) to truly get two servings out of every bag.

This meal has good flavor. The Okra and bell pepper have a bright and very fresh taste. You can see (and pronounce) all of the qaulity ingredients. I had the same issue others have experianced with the big chunks of pork not quite fully re-hydrating. However I love the big pieces of meat! So next time I will break them in half as I prep the meal and stir it more often while re-hydrating with a little more water. Then add some Extra hot Slap Ya Momma seasoning to really spice it up.
The portion is large and was very satisfying overall.
So glad to have great meals full of real food! All of the other dehydrated meals are simply full of noodles, rice and things I can't pronounce.
With Next Mile I feel like I am getting my money's worth.
This isn't your typical freeze dried meal with tiny chunks of meat. The meat chunks are huge, giving it a "home-cooked" feel in your mouth. The downside is that you will need to have boiling water and give it at least 10 minutes to steep. Even then you might get a piece or two that is not completely re-hydrated. I don't know if I would sacrifice the size of the meat however to have the occasional dried center of meat. I didn't mind that since it was nice to chew on something and not have it disappear in the veggies. Not too spicy, and some might want to add hot sauce. Nice flavor, and lots of veggies and feels good to eat it. I did not feel bloated or lethargic after eating it. For those who had issues with dried chunks of meat: I would say you need to steep it even longer than what they suggest and stir it 2 or 3 x.
Tasted like it would have been good if I could have consumed it added plenty of water waited more than enough time multiple items still hard and dry inside. So far worst backpacking meals I've tried by far
Hi Dennis, Sorry to hear you were having rehydration issues with your meal! Often a hiker's unique trek environment -- such as altitude and local air temperature -- can impact the amount of water needed, rehydration time, and required water temp. We're updating our packaging to better explain that hikers should be prepared to add a little more water, a little more time, or a little more heat depending on specific conditions. Thanks for the feedback!
I like the flavors in this meal, the only issue is the pork chunks are a little too big, so I have dry pieces of pork no matter how long I steep it.
Portions, pack ability, and flavor are fantastic!
